BIMAL MENDIS STUDIO • SPRING 2018
FOAM, NAILS, PINS, STRING LIGHTS, LIGHT BULB
The Globe examines how light pollution affects the world. The globe is punctured with small holes that allow light through, representing the varying intensity of light pollution around the world. The string lights surrounding the globe represent the stars.
The Globe presents the reality of light pollution as a confusion between light that is produced from cities and light that is produced from stars. Around the world, many people do not have access to clear, unpolluted skies. As the artificial world becomes brighter, the natural world becomes dimmer, and vice versa. The Globe seeks to represent this issue by mimicking the beauty of both light sources, but also showing that in their brilliant strength, they drown each other out.
